WHAT IS THE MEANING OF 108 IN YOGA | WHY ARE THERE 108 BEADS ON A MALA?

The number 108 is often talked about in yoga class but what is its significance?

Here are a few examples of the meaning of 108:

The Ancient language (of the Gods) Sanskrit, comprises of 54 letters, each with a masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) form, 54 x 2 = 108

The number 108 is considered to be sacred in many Eastern religions, representing the universe as God/ Divinity (1), Emptiness/Completion (0) and Infinity/ Eternity (8)

In astrology, there are 9 planets and 12 houses. 12 x 9 = 108.

“The diameter of the Sun multiplied by 108 equals the distance between Sun and Earth, and the diameter of the Moon multiplied by 108 equals the distance between Earth and Moon. The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. That is why we have 108 beads in a mala.” Sadhguru

In Ayurveda, there are said to be 108 Marma Points.

There are said to have 108 Upanishads, texts of wisdom from the ancient sages.
